FW: Best Optical Illusion ever seen--too cool

but it isn't working here

FW: upcoming entertainment

The Queers are a great band.  Kinda like The Ramones, but less mature.  You can get an idea of the fun level from the song titles on their last CD:

  • No Tit
  • Punk Rock Girls
  • I'm OK, You're Fucked
  • I Only Drink Bud

This has a lyric for Scott:

People from Chicago

Like to brag about Old Style

Before I drink that swill again

It's going to be awhile!

  • Born To Do Dishes

I wish I could go, but it is Thursday night.  The Bottom of the Hill is a fun place.

I will not miss the Gore Gore Girls this Friday at The Blank Club in SJ.

Rock 'N Roll girls from Detroit in white thigh high go go boots who can play really well.

What more could you want?

They have also added a Gore Gore Boy as a bassist for those of you who lean that way.

See you down front,

Miles

Gogol Bordello, New York City's legendary Gypsy punk band, returns with the release of "Gypsy Punks: Underdog World Strike," their third album of Gypsy punk rock mayhem. Just released on SideOneDummy and produced by Steve Albini in glorious analogue sound, "Gypsy Punks" is an expansive 15-track salvo that expands the band's fusion of Gypsy punk and Slavic stomp with a touch of metal and dub-wise sound effects that pay tribute to the classic sounds of Jamaica. Singer/lyricist visionary Eugene Hutz and the rest of the Gogol collective have attained a new level of musical and lyrical intensity in their continuing cultural crusade to build a bridge between Gypsy music, rock 'n' roll and other brands of rebel music from Flamenco to the perestroika punk that blossomed in Eastern Europe during the mid-'80s.

FW: music this summer

Gogol Bordello were mind blowing.  If you get the chance to see them, do so.

Dub FX and Dub Congress are playing tonight at the Blank Club.  Dub FX is too pop and mainstream for my taste, but Dub Congress has real roots.  I won't make it, but next weekend I'll be out and about.

Next Friday at the Blank Club will be good.  Yvonne said INSPECT HER GADGET are fun.  I know FABULOUS DISASTER are great.  How can you not like punk chicks playing loud fast guitars?

Next Saturday at Slim's will be good.  Groovie Ghoulies are very good at the Ramonesque fun punk thing.  The Mr. T Experience has a zillion good songs with clever lyrics.

Sometime in August the Gore Gore Girls from Detroit are coming back to the Blank Club.  Probably to dance with Enrique again!

See you down front.

Miles

MTX (known by the long-form The Mr. T Experience) has been a ferociously inventive band since their 1986 self-released debut album, "Everyone's Entitled To Their Own Opinion." 10 albums and over 200,000 in sales later, MTX is still better at what they do than anyone else. What began as a Brit-influenced art punk band became one of the earliest and most compelling pop punk bands of all time. MTX has kept growing over the years, pushing pop songwriting and arranging as a post-pop punk rock band. The 13 songs of their latest release "Yesterday Rules" sounds like what they are: the creation of a songwriter who has created and mastered genres and is at the height of his powers. Dr. Frank's songs are so consistently catchy and witty that is almost easy to take the output of his remarkable band for granted. But to do so and miss out on the amazing new songs would be a mistake!

This was a tremendous show. They put so much energy out. Many impassioned dancers in the crowd. Including yours truly. I wish my knee was 100% so I could really let go, but it was still a catharsis.

blank club saturday night 7/2 be there

Combining elements of punk, gypsy music, and Brecht-ian cabaret, Gogol Bordello tells the story of New York's immigrant diaspora through debauchery, humor, and surreal costumes. Leader and singer Eugene Hütz's taste in music was spun out of black-market tapes of the Birthday Party and Einstürzande Neubauten in his native Ukraine. After being evacuated to Western Ukraine in 1986 following the Chernobyl disaster, Hütz became enamored of the mystical, outsider qualities of gypsy music. Living as a refugee in Poland, Hungary, Austria, and Italy before moving to the United States in 1993, he experienced life as an outsider himself. After arriving in New York, he teamed up with guitarist Vlad Solofar and squeezebox player Sasha Kazatchkoff. American Eliot Fergusen added a strong rock sound on the drums and the band was also augmented by Sergei Riabtsev on fiddle, a former theater director from Moscow whose past experience would prove helpful in the future in crafting Gogol Bordello's bizarre stage shows (like one which tells the story of super-powered immigrant Ukrainian vampires). The group's early gigs involved playing straight gypsy music at Russian weddings, but their music soon evolved into the hyper-kinetic explosions that earned them a solid following amongst New York's downtown hipsters. The band issued a single in 1999 entitled When the Trickster Comes a Pokin', quickly followed by their debut full-length, Voi-La Intruder, which was produced by Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds' drummer Jim Sclavunos. Solofar and Kazatchkoff were replaced by accordionist Yuri Lemeshev, who hails from the Russian island of Sakhalin, and two Israelis, guitarist Oren Kaplan and saxophonist Ori Kaplan, who despite their similar names were not related. Hütz helped bolster the band's popularity by becoming somewhat of a celebrity in the downtown scene, in part fueled by his Thursday night DJ gigs at Bulgarian club/restaurant/bar Mehanata, where he played Ukrainian, Gypsy, raï, and flamenco music for a crowd of artists, models, Ukrainians, Russians, Gypsies, and Bulgarians with tendencies toward exuberant dancing and smashing plates. In the spring of 2002, Gogol Bordello embarked on a European tour and performed as part of the Whitney Biennial, bringing their music to a whole new audience.

They are true punk pioneers of the genre as they've toured every corner of the globe several times over and have insisted on holding true to their punk ethics. No band has achieved more success independently, and they've done it all without help from MTV or any other aspect of the corporate rock industry. Although they're reluctant to admit it, they're musically influenced by bands like Bad Religion, Misfits, RKL, etc. At least they were back in in the day, now they do all the influencing.

The Slackers sound is pure roots, but still innovative. While they have been influenced, and even personally taught by Jamaican originators, like the Skatalites and the Upsetters (original backing band for the Wailers), the band sees its music through an American lens. This band is equally appreciative of old blues, 60's soul, rock, and R & B as it is of reggae, rocksteady, dub and ska. It is as if the Rolling Stones or the Yardbirds had grown up on Bob Marley as well as Muddy Waters.

text blog entry

No picture.
No links.
No cut and paste.
Monday 5/30/2005 10:51 PM PDT.
Matt is in bed. Lynn is in La Jolla with Eleanor.
Bailey's on the rock when I don't really need more. Tastes good.
THE EYES OF MAY is a photo project I have assigned myself starting 5/28/2005.
I only have 1 or 2 (if I bend the rules) days left. People I will look for tomorrow and next day are
Bev, Brenda, Betty, Shirla, Ashley, Richard, Nanette, Precy, Ian, Gene, Juni, Kioko, others.

Eleanor fractured her pelvis last Sunday. Lynn has been down there for the past week. I want Eleanor to get better, and Lynn to come home. I miss salad.

Really, really, looking forward to Monkey at The Blank Club this Friday [6/3/2005]

Monkey Party in plain text

I've increased the depth of my email list considerably for this
event, to support a very good local band. If you haven't heard from
me for awhile and don''t want to again, let me know or just ignore it.

WestBound Train is playing some California dates in mid-June. I
don't know if they will make it to NorCal. They were really good
last year. This Friday at the Blank Club should be great. Uprite
Dub Orchestra has been added to the line-up. Some info about them is
pasted in at the end. Sounds like music even an inebriated middle
aged man with a bum knee could dance to! Come out and find out.

Uprite Dub Orchestra

Band Name
Uprite Dub Orchestra
Type of Music
Funk
City/State of Origin
Portland, OR
Web Site
http://upritedub.com

Uprite Dub Orchestra is a six-member band featuring a solid rhythm
section of guitar, bass and drum kit complemented by tenor sax,
trombone, and trumpet with occasional appearances of keyboards,
melodica, and the upright bass. Drawn together by their love of
instrumental music and the lengths to which it can be explored, the
Uprite dub sound is a cross breed of Jamaican beats loosely based in
the dub styles pioneered at Channel 1 studios and Lee Perry’s Black
Ark. In late August 2001, founders Ryan Bley and Brandon Hutson had a
vision inspired by the likes of Augustus Pablo, King Tubby, The
Skatalites, The Specials and Sublime.

Brandon and Ryan recruited some good friends and fellow musicians and
formed the Uprite dub Orchestra. Finding the other members of the
band was not a problem, as all the members of the band were from Mt.
Hood Community College's Jazz Band, with the exception of Jeremy who
played together with Ryan in a band from Spokane, WA called Longview.
The lineup features Taylor Aglipay on Tenor Sax and Guitar, Jeremy
Jauchius on Guitar, Mike Montgomery on Drums, Justin Partney on
Trumpet and Keys, Brandon Hutson on Trombone, Keys and Melodica, and
Ryan Bley on Upright and Electric Basses. Uprite dub Orchestra
officially formed in December of 2001.

After a few months of practice, their first gig was the Red and Black
Cafe in Portland, OR on February 12, 2002 with the Hip Hop group
Money & Lovin'. Soon after, the band had polished off a few tunes
around March of 2002. Along with Money & Lovin’ they founded and co-
hosted a weekly night of Dub and Hip hop featuring the finest Djs and
artists from the local Portland metro area at the Mount Tabor Pub,
the Tuesday Night Special. Uprite dub Orchestra also performed at the
“Land and Freedom” benefit concert for Dignity Village, a tent city
transition for the homeless. Inspired by the plight of Dignity
Village, Uprite dub composed and dedicated a song entitled "Land &
Freedom Dub”. In March '03 along with Universal Roots Records shop,
Uprite hosted a monthly series called “Kulcha fi de Massive” which
featured Uprite dub as well the best reggae, dub, and dancehall
Portland had to offer such as Roots Revolution, Instigators,
Earthforce, Alter Echo and DJs Cansaman and Magneto.

The song list from Uprite dub Orchestra stretches from tight
arrangements of Augustus Pablo and Don Drummond songs; with the
original sweet horn harmonies, to fresh original material; tales of
struggle, oppression, and freedom from the Machine. Be it Dub Reggae,
Ska, or Hip-hop; Uprite dub Orchestra knows how to “get the party
started right”.
