The AKAs
****************************************************************************

I had high expectations and they were met, nay exceeded!

The AKAs were a great opening band. Good basic rock with charisma. They are everywhere.

Whole Wheat Bread rocked me and made me think. That doesn't happen often. I was expecting 3 black dudes, so when I saw a white guy who looked like Shaun White on bass, I was taken a back. 15 minutes later, his playing and vocals were all that mattered. I have a pretty deep aversion to hip-hop, but when WWB mix it in with punk and ska I can take it. A good good set. Old Man Samson was my favorite song. Figure that.

Big D and the Kid's Table were great. What really impressed me was the sound on their dub songs. I'm not sure how much was them and their equipment and how much was the BOTH sound engineer, but the result was fine. Their fast songs set the crowd to skanking madly. The lead singer had a 3 minute sermon which even my son agreed was pretty damn cool. They played fast, long and hard. Lots of songs from their new CD which I really like. They closed with a cover of the Specials song "Little Bitch". Good times.

I went with 3 sixteen year old boys. Between them, they had one fall to the ground in the mellow pit. I hit the ground 3 times! My elbow turned into a swell-bow! I need to work on my agility, I guess. I did dance harder than 95% of the folks there. There were girls in the pit. That is good. They smell so much better than the average punk dude!

I saw one of the guys from The Uptones there. If I wasn't a dork, I'd remember his name. He mentioned that he noticed my van when he was parking. Sweet! My van got tagged while we were there. A girl wrote; "nipples rock!" with lipstick on the side window and drew a heart. I took a photo, as it in only a matter of time until my wife makes me scrape it off. A couple of guys at work noticed it today. They agree that nipples do rock!

There was a good crowd but it wasn't sold out. I thought I would see some of the BAS crowd. I did not.

I got a black WWB dirty south punk rock t-shirt and a WWB drum stick. My son got a fine Big D ska hat and polo shirt (his high school has banned t-shirts). I am jealous of his hat.

Fun fun times. I cannot wait for the Aquabats at Slims next week.

Miles

20071110 San Jose Skate

This is Trouble in Paradise doing skank pirate. Fun! Benefits I really liked the sound of their guitar player. Very classic punk. Poor AJ and the most likely to's Lots of skanking and laughter. They have a great sense of humor. Their cover of the Aquabats' Super Rad was excellent. Firme Some changes in the line-up, but the core is still there and they are all great musicians. The sound is much more rock than reggae not. When they have the upbeats going it is irresistible. I don't think any of the kids had heard them before. They liked them! Trouble in Paradise I thought they got off to a slow start, but then they found their groove. Skank Pirate was absolutely nuts. I really like the kids that go to these shows. They can dance like maniacs and don't laugh at the old man when he tries hard to keep up. Fun! tick tock -- the march of time

tick tock -- the march of time

tick tock

Coming back from the Drop Kick Murphys show at the Warfield in SF last night, my son says to me; "Dad, you probably shouldn't go into mosh pits that are that intense anymore. Your balance isn't that good and you're old and I worry about you." The fact I had been knocked down twice, had my glasses knocked off, and had a little cut on the bridge of my nose which sent a rivulet of blood running down my nose, made me think that he might have a point.

...sigh...

The show was great and lots of fun. I do think that the mosh pit thing at shows like this is kind of stupid. It doesn't have anything to do with the music for most of the guys. They are just out to throw themselves into other people and kick ass. Hardly anyone was dancing on the floor and this was music that lends itself to dancing.

I am inclined to stick to the smaller venues. Next on the agenda is Big D/Whole Wheat Bread at The Bottom of The Hill in a couple of weeks.

Before going to the Warfield last night, we stopped by Thee Parkside to catch the happy hour set by The Tomorrow Men. Danny, Tony, and company were sounding good. See them if you get a chance.

now you know
