justin at csp 1

Justin skating at CSP late Saturday afternoon (10/21/06). The setting on my camera was messed up so I didn't spend much time editing. I did tweak the speed and colors on my two favorite tricks.

20061021 Matt and Dad skate

It had been about 3 weeks since we had been out. It was great to be skating again. Matt did a heel side coleman at speed on the steep that was just gorgeous. I didn't get any scrapes! At the end is a clip from 5 years ago that was on my camera. Matt and Harry at the beach at Greyhound Rock north of Santa Cruz.

Flip the Switch at Nickel City

Pasting from my comment on the Bay Area Ska board: Changing the subject from the Peggy - Longsean smart ass love fest... I made it to the show, but late. Paid $2 to get into the arcade and $6 to get into the arcade birthday/music room. I hope the $6 went to the bands. SOL was playing and lots of kids were skanking. It was hot. The temperature that is. SOL isn't my cup of tea. I got a preview copy of the new BAS e-zine. Not bad. Flip The Switch were lots of fun. The sound, especially the vocals, was totally screwed, but they blasted through it. The kids were skanking like mad and me too! Turns out I can still dance even with 0 beers. Well, that's my opinion anyways. It was way too hot. Everyone was dripping sweat and I nearly melted. FTS seemed to have a good time. I took pictures and bummed a drum stick, and split before the last band. I handed out flyers for the next RSL show. The energy level of the kids at this show was so great. If we could get RSL to try an all ages show I think it would make a big difference. Before the show, I had a great time skating in the semi-darkness at Sunnyvale skate park (after dark, partially illuminated by the football field lights) with Rico Rodriquez--Man From Wareika blasting from my van. My favorite run was a long nose wheelie carve, front-side grind, 540 spin, bert slide on the coping of the little vert wall. Just what I needed after a truly crappy week at work. ********************************************************* The show was: Presented by PinUp Productions October, 6 2006 at 7:00 pm Featuring; Trouble in Paradise, Flip the Switch, S.O.L., The Cyn Project, Allis Anatomy 1711 Branham Lane, @ Nickel City, CA 95118 Cost: $8-FREE video games www.myspace.com/shitouttaluck www.myspace.com/troubleinparadise www.myspace.com/thecynproject www.myspace.com/fliptheswitch (Could not locate info on Allis Anatomy.) www.myspace.com/pinupproductionssj www.myspace.com/nickelcity Percussed Netherlands 1067 Posts

if you get a chance

I haven't seen them live yet, but their CD is great.  If you get a chance to see them and/or see the movie, I really think you should.  This isn't some snotty punk rock or druggy trance music.  This is real roots music from the heart that will make you want to dance.  Check it out!

Subject: "Living Like A Refugee" - Released around the world!

Dear All,

Sorry to send out another mass e-mail so quickly, but we're very excited to share some news with you. As you may know Sierra Leone's Refugee All Stars album "Living Like a Refugee" produced by Chris Velan (http://www.chrisvelan.com) was released last week on Anti Records. What you may not know is that by Monday of this week it had reached to #23 on the Amazon.Com Top Seller list!

The album has been propelled by the excited word of mouth from people like you, believers who may have seen the film or even owned an earlier version of the album - BUT also by great reviews such as this one from Bill Flanagan on CBS Sunday Morning News:

"...It sounds like an interesting story, good intentions — but how good could the music really be?... Well let me tell you, the music is fantastic. These musicians may have been thrown together by brutal circumstance, but they have made something uplifting and beautiful. They have built a bridge between the best contemporary African music and the inspirational reggae of Bob Marley."

We couldn't have said it better!

These early days in the life of an album are very important for its future - so we are doing what we can to keep the upward momentum going. And, of course, you can help! If you don't have "Living Like A Refugee" (or want to get some early holiday shopping out of the way) you can find it in any good record store now - or - you can click on the link below to have a portion of your Purchase on Amazon donated to the non-profit Music in Schools Today (MuST) and help two causes in one keystroke:

You can also help by submitting a glowing review to Amazon.com or any blogs etc... that you are a part of. The success of this whole project depends on a grassroots groundswell - so if you like the music, if you like the film - don't be shy, tell people about it.

Sierra Leone's Refugee All Stars continue to be a potent symbol of the healing power of music, and as they take on a new challenge, transitioning from unknown refugee camp troubadours to international stars and ambassadors of peace they continue to inspire us all.

Thank you as always for your support.

The SLRAS crew.....

Both the band and the film will be on tour throughout the fall and winter!

Matt and Dad Go FAST

Well, not all that fast compared to some, but faster then we have ever gone. We pushed limits today , Sunday 10/1/06. I haven't gone this fast since around 1980! I was really scared my first run and then I was stoked. I have to learn how to slide at speed. Right now when I get going 15+mph I'm afraid to go into a slide.

Subject: [Pollodelmar] September shows- Dick Dale, The Kilaueas (from Germany) and SF City Hall

Hiya Pollo fans,
September is turning out to be a very fun month...
On September 9, we will open for Dick Dale (you know who he is,
right?) at the haunted Brookdale Lodge. Brookdale is in the Santa
Cruz mountains, and the Lodge has a nice restaurant and rooms, so why
not make an evening out of it?

Sunday September 10 we will back at The Hotel Utah for another
fantastic show. Opening up are our buds The Pyronauts, and headlining
will be (all the way from Germany) The Kilaueas. They are a pounding
trad band, with 2 CDs on the Double Crown label. They are on a West
Coast only tour, and we are lucky to get them for a Sunday Surf Party
show. Check out this video of the Kilaueas performing "Caravan":
and the Kilaueas home page is at:
The Giants game doesn't start until 5 that day, so there will be
plenty of parking around the Hotel Utah.  The Utah allows minors, but
they must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. The Hotel Utah is
at fourth and Bryant in San Francisco. Doors at 2, music starts at 3.

September 16, Pollo del Mar plays outside City Hall in San Francisco.
We start at noon.
September 22, Pollo plays 3 sets at the Park Chalet. 1000 Great
Highway at Ocean Beach, we start at 8:30, all ages welcome.

And something to look forward to: Last year in Japan, we had the a
chance to play with The Whys from Fukuoka. Liked 'em so much we
offered to set up a US tour for them. Look for Bay Area dates the
first week of November, and SoCal dates the second week. In the
meantime, check out their myspace page for pictures and music:

THANKS!!!
The Pollos
